Light & UV Measurement Guide

Understand what Lux, CCT, white LED spectral distribution, UVI, UVA and UVB actually describe — and why visible-light measurement and ultraviolet measurement require different tools.

“Light” is not one single measurement. A lighting designer checking Lux and CCT is asking a very different question from a reptile keeper checking UVI, UVA or UVB from a UV lamp.

The correct instrument depends on which part of the electromagnetic spectrum you need to measure and what decision you are trying to make.

The practical rule:

Use visible-light measurements for visible lighting questions. Use dedicated UV measurements for ultraviolet questions. A Lux meter does not replace a UV meter, and a UV reading does not tell you how bright a room appears to the human eye.

Six Measurements Used in Light & UV Evaluation

Lux

Measures visible illuminance on a surface using a response weighted for human vision.

CCT

Describes the apparent warm or cool color appearance of many white light sources, expressed in kelvin.

Spectral Distribution

Shows how measured light energy is distributed across wavelength regions supported by the instrument.

UVI

A weighted ultraviolet measurement based on the biological effectiveness of UV radiation.

UVA

Measures ultraviolet radiation in the UVA wavelength region.

UVB

Measures ultraviolet radiation in the UVB wavelength region.

What Does Lux Measure?

Lux is a unit of illuminance. It describes how much visible light reaches a surface, weighted according to the sensitivity of human vision.

That makes Lux useful for evaluating lighting conditions in spaces where human-visible brightness matters.

Examples include comparing:

  • Different locations in the same room
  • Lighting uniformity across a work surface
  • Different white LED fixtures
  • Changes after replacing or repositioning lights
  • Multiple points across an illuminated area
Lux does not measure UV.

A lamp can produce ultraviolet radiation that is not represented by its visible Lux reading. If your question involves UVA, UVB or UVI, use a meter designed for those measurements.

What Is Correlated Color Temperature?

Correlated Color Temperature, usually shortened to CCT, describes the apparent color appearance of many white light sources.

Lower CCT values are generally associated with warmer-looking white light, while higher CCT values are generally associated with cooler-looking white light.

CCT is useful for checking whether installed lighting matches the intended white-light appearance and whether different fixtures are reasonably consistent.

Important distinction:

CCT describes the apparent white-light color appearance. It is not the same thing as measuring the full spectral composition of a light source.

Why Look at White LED Spectral Distribution?

Two white LED sources can have similar brightness and similar CCT while still distributing light differently across visible wavelengths.

Viewing spectral distribution provides another layer of information beyond Lux and CCT alone.

For standard phosphor-converted white LEDs, this can help users compare fixtures, investigate lighting differences and document measured white LED output.

Instrument scope matters.

E130 is intended for standard phosphor-converted white LED measurement. Do not assume one lighting meter is appropriate for every possible light source or every spectral measurement application.

What Is UVI?

UVI means UV Index. It is a weighted measure of ultraviolet radiation based on its biological effectiveness rather than a simple total-energy reading.

For reptile UV lighting, UVI can be useful when checking lamp output at the actual basking location instead of judging a lamp only from its label, appearance or distance.

Lamp type, distance, angle, reflector design, mesh and lamp age can all influence the UV that reaches the measurement point.

UVA vs. UVB: Why Measure Them Separately?

UVA and UVB refer to different wavelength regions within ultraviolet radiation. They are not interchangeable measurements.

Looking at these measurements together can provide more information about a UV source than relying on a single number alone.

Why Measure More Than One Point?

Lighting and UV output can vary across space. A reading directly below a lamp may be different from a reading only a short distance away.

Multi-point measurement is useful when you want to understand distribution rather than just one isolated location.

Examples include:

  • Checking lighting uniformity across a surface
  • Comparing center and edge illumination
  • Documenting several positions under a lighting system
  • Checking different locations across a reptile basking area

Measurement Position Matters

A measurement is meaningful only in the context of where and how it was taken.

For visible lighting, measure at the surface or location you actually want to evaluate.

For reptile UV measurement, measure where the animal experiences the lamp — for example, at the basking location — rather than assuming the lamp label represents the UV at every distance.

For repeatable comparisons:

  • Keep measurement position consistent
  • Keep sensor orientation consistent
  • Record distance from the source when relevant
  • Compare similar measurement locations
  • Repeat measurements when evaluating changes over time

What does Lux measure?
Lux measures visible illuminance on a surface and is weighted for human visual response.
What does CCT mean?
CCT means correlated color temperature. It describes the apparent warm or cool color appearance of many white light sources and is expressed in kelvin.
Can a Lux meter measure UV?
No. Lux is a visible-light measurement. UVA, UVB and UVI require measurement designed for ultraviolet radiation.
Is UVI the same as UVB?

Why measure UVA and UVB separately?
UVA and UVB occupy different ultraviolet wavelength regions. Separate readings provide more information about the output of a UV source than treating all ultraviolet radiation as one value.

Choose the Measurement That Matches the Question

Use E130 when the question is visible white LED lighting — Lux, CCT, spectral distribution and multi-point comparison. Use E-ABI when the question is reptile UV lamp output — UVI, UVA and UVB at the actual measurement location.
